Trash to Beauty – Titus 2:1-10
A Godly Church that Glorifies God – Part 6
From Trash to Beauty: Finding God’s Purpose in Life’s Challenges
Have you ever looked at a difficult situation in your life and thought, “This is just trash”? We’ve all been there. Whether it’s the struggles of aging, the long days of parenting, or dealing with a difficult boss, life can sometimes feel like one big trash heap. But what if I told you that God sees something different in those challenging moments? What if, instead of trash, He sees an opportunity for beauty?
In a recent sermon, we explored this transformative concept through Paul’s letter to Titus. Let’s dive into how we can turn life’s “trash” into opportunities to showcase the beauty of Jesus.
The Unexpected Canvas of Life
Paul’s instructions in Titus 2 cover a wide range of life situations – from older men and women to younger generations and even slaves. At first glance, these might seem like disconnected groups. But there’s a common thread running through all of them: each represents a potentially difficult life stage or situation.
As our pastor pointed out, “Throughout scripture we see that often the gospel is most clearly worked in our lives, the truth of Jesus has worked in our lives best when things aren’t going well, right? When things are hard.”
This is a profound truth. Our natural inclination is to avoid hardship, to see it as something to be discarded. But God invites us to see these challenges differently – as opportunities to “adorn the doctrine of God our Savior” (Titus 2:10).
Finding Beauty in the Everyday Struggles
Let’s break down how this plays out in different life stages:
1. The Challenges of Aging
For older men and women, Paul emphasizes qualities like self-control, dignity, and sound faith. Our pastor observed, “Often as we get older, I kind of joke about it, but I think it’s true, all of us at some point in life, we kind of stay at a certain stage.” The temptation might be to become set in our ways or resentful of changes. But instead, we’re called to use our wisdom and experience to teach and encourage the younger generation.
2. The Long Days of Parenting
For younger women (and men), the struggles are different but no less real. “I hear a lot especially from moms,” our pastor shared, “that the days are long, right?” In those moments of exhaustion and repetition, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. But even in these challenging days, we have the opportunity to model Christ’s love and patience.
3. The Difficult Workplace
Perhaps the most striking example comes from Paul’s instructions to slaves (which we can apply to challenging work situations today). Our pastor explained, “Even a slave who may have a terrible master, or even an employee who has a terrible boss, you can show good faith to that person, being trustworthy and do what is right for that person, keeping their best interest in mind even when they don’t keep yours.”
This is where the beauty truly shines through. When we respond to unfair treatment with integrity and grace, it’s like “a flower in a trash heap” – it stands out and draws attention to the transformative power of Christ in our lives.
From Trash to Treasure: A New Perspective
Our pastor shared a beautiful illustration about his daughter Addison, who saw potential in items others considered trash. “She would take like a little bottle cap and she would make this entire piece of artwork,” he explained. “She saw not like a bottle cap, she saw the whole picture around the bottle cap.”
This is the perspective shift God invites us into. Where we see trash – difficult circumstances, challenging relationships, unfair situations – God sees the potential for a masterpiece that displays His glory.
Putting It Into Practice
So how do we live this out? Here are some practical steps:
- Embrace the Challenge: Instead of resenting difficult situations, ask God, “What do you want to do through this difficult time in my life? How can I communicate Jesus?”
- Look for Opportunities: In every situation, no matter how mundane or frustrating, look for ways to demonstrate Christ’s love, patience, and integrity.
- Remember Your Impact: As our pastor reminded us, “You affect what people think about Jesus a lot more than you think.” Your actions in difficult times speak volumes.
- Seek Support: We all need encouragement. Find older believers who can offer wisdom, or connect with peers who can “urge” you on in your faith journey.
- Keep the Big Picture in Mind: Like Addison with her bottle cap art, try to see beyond the immediate struggle to the beautiful work God might be creating through your life.
As we navigate life’s challenges, let’s remember that we have the incredible opportunity to “adorn the doctrine of God our Savior” in everything we do. By His grace, we can turn life’s trash into a beautiful display of His transforming power.
“We are called that in everything that we do to bring Beauty to who Jesus is,” our pastor concluded. “Does he need our help? No, but we have the opportunity to be his representative here on this Earth as part of his body.”
May we embrace that opportunity today, transforming life’s trash heaps into gardens that showcase the beauty of our Savior.
