7 Questions That Will Transform Your View on Giving

Have you ever wondered if your giving really matters? As a pastor, I’ve seen firsthand how generosity can impact lives and further God’s kingdom. But giving isn’t just about the amount – it’s about our heart attitude and understanding of God’s provision. Let’s explore seven questions that can revolutionize how we approach giving.

Am I Thankful for God’s Provision?

The Apostle Paul, writing from prison, expressed his gratitude to the Philippian church for their support: “I have great joy in the Lord because now at last you have again expressed your concern for me” (Philippians 4:10). Paul’s thankfulness wasn’t just for the gift itself, but for God’s provision through His people.

We should cultivate a spirit of gratitude for God’s provision in our lives – whether it’s salvation, sanctification, or the generosity of others. I think back to my college days when certain families supported me financially, ensuring I graduated debt-free. We must never forget God’s goodness and the people He uses to bless us.

Am I Content with God’s Provision?

Paul writes, “I have learned to be content in any circumstance” (Philippians 4:11-12). This contentment wasn’t dependent on his situation – whether in abundance or need. Our contentment should be rooted in Christ, not our circumstances.

Hebrews 13:5 challenges us: “Keep your life free from the love of money and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.'” Would you still be content if you lost it all or gained it all? True contentment comes from our relationship with Jesus.

Am I an Active Partner in Gospel Ministry?

The Philippian church partnered with Paul in his ministry through their financial support. When you give regularly to your church, you’re partnering in the work of the gospel – whether it’s outreach events, missions, or church planting. Your partnership enables the church to do more for God’s kingdom.

Do I Understand That Giving is Fruit That Abounds?

Paul says in Philippians 4:17, “I seek the credit that abounds to your account.” Our giving lays up treasures in heaven. As Alistair Begg says, every believer should have an “IEA” – an Individual Eternal Account. When we give, it abounds to our account in eternity.

Do I See My Giving as an Act of Worship?

Paul describes the Philippians’ gifts as “a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God” (Philippians 4:18). Our giving should be deliberate, prayerful, and done as an act of worship to God. It’s not just a financial transaction, but a tangible expression of our faith and love for God.

Do I Believe That God Will Meet My Needs?

Philippians 4:19 assures us, “And my God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” This promise is rooted in the context of the Philippians’ sacrificial giving. When we obey God in our giving, we can trust Him to provide for our needs.

Am I Giving for the Glory of God?

Ultimately, our giving should be for God’s glory. As Paul concludes, “To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen” (Philippians 4:20). Everything we have comes from the Lord, and we give it back to Him for His glory.

Life Application: Putting It Into Practice

1. Reflect on God’s provision in your life and express gratitude.
2. Evaluate your contentment – is it based on circumstances or Christ?
3. Consider how you can partner more actively in gospel ministry through giving.
4. View your giving as laying up treasures in heaven.
5. Approach giving as an act of worship, not just a financial transaction.
6. Trust God to meet your needs as you give faithfully.
7. Give for God’s glory, not for personal recognition.

As we ponder these questions, may they transform our perspective on giving. Remember, there’s no pressure or manipulation here – it’s about aligning our hearts with God’s will and trusting Him completely. Let’s pray about how we can give faithfully and joyfully for the advancement of God’s kingdom.
