A Godly Church that Glorifies God – Part 1
Every Church: Lessons from Titus on Building a Godly Community
Have you ever wondered what it takes to build a truly God-honoring church? As we dive into the book of Titus, we’ll uncover timeless truths that apply to every church – including ours. Join me as we explore how to create a community that glorifies God and impacts the world around us.
Introduction: The Challenge of Crete
Imagine being sent to minister on an island known for its difficult people and lack of spiritual leadership. That’s exactly where the Apostle Paul sent his trusted companion, Titus. As Paul writes in Titus 1:5, “The reason I left you in Crete was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you.”
The island of Crete was no easy mission field. In fact, Paul quotes one of their own prophets in Titus 1:12, saying, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” Yet it was in this challenging environment that God called Titus to establish strong, healthy churches.
As we study this letter, we’ll discover four key truths that apply to every church, including our own:
1. Every Church Has Its Own Set of Challenges
No church is perfect, and each faces unique obstacles. In Crete, Titus encountered a lack of leadership, false teaching, and worldliness creeping into the church. These issues aren’t so different from what we face today.
We must be willing to honestly assess our own congregation. Are we truly living out our commitment to holiness, faithful relationships, and love for others? As our church constitution states, we believe in “striving to live a life separated from the sins of the world consistent with the teaching of the Bible.”
2. Every Church Must Have Godly Leadership
Paul emphasizes the critical importance of appointing qualified leaders. In the coming weeks, we’ll delve deeper into the specific qualities God requires for church leadership. For now, let’s remember that strong, godly leadership is essential for a healthy church.
3. Every Church Must Be Committed to Obedience
Throughout Titus, we see calls to obedience for every member of the church – young and old, male and female, leaders and followers. As Paul writes in Titus 2:11-12, “For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.”
This obedience isn’t just for some – it’s for all of us. We’re called to be examples of Christ’s transforming power in every area of our lives.
4. Every Church Must Understand That Our Only Hope Is the Lord
Ultimately, the book of Titus reminds us that our strength and hope come from God alone. Three times in this short letter, Paul presents rich theological truths about Christ’s saving work (Titus 1:1-3, 2:11-14, 3:4-7). As one commentator noted, these passages contain “some of the richest theological concentrations in the entire New Testament.”
No matter what challenges we face, the gospel is our solution. There’s no problem that the power of Christ can’t overcome.
Putting It Into Practice
As we reflect on these truths from Titus, let’s consider how we can apply them to our lives and our church:
- Pray for our church leadership, that God would grant wisdom and strength.
- Examine your own heart. Are there areas where you need to grow in obedience?
- Commit to building multi-generational relationships within our church family.
- Remember that our ultimate hope is in Christ alone. Run to Him in times of difficulty.
Let’s close with Paul’s encouragement in Titus 2:14, reminding us that Jesus “gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.”
May we be that people – eager to do good, committed to obedience, and always looking to Christ as our source of hope and strength.
